What is Selank?

Selank was designed at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Russian Academy of Sciences, with the V.V. Zakusov Research Institute of Pharmacology. Its first four residues, Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg, are tuftsin, a short fragment of the immunoglobulin G heavy chain. The C-terminal Pro-Gly-Pro (a “glyproline”) was added to slow enzymatic breakdown and prolong its action.

How Selank has been studied

No single receptor for Selank has been identified. The mechanisms proposed in the literature are:

Clinical work on Selank comes almost entirely from Russia and is mostly published in Russian. Two comparative studies, in 62 and 60 patients, compared it with the benzodiazepines medazepam and phenazepam using standard anxiety rating scales. Zozulia AA, et al., 2008; Medvedev VE, et al., 2014. Zhurnal Nevrologii i Psikhiatrii. ClinicalTrials.gov lists no Selank studies.

Regulatory status

A 2022 review lists Selank among the peptide products registered in the Russian Federation. In the US it is not an approved drug, and FDA’s page on bulk substances that may present significant safety risks in compounding lists “Selank acetate (TP-7)” among nominated-but-withdrawn substances, noting limited human safety information.
