BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-residue peptide, Gly-Glu-Pro-Pro-Pro-Gly-Lys-Pro-Ala-Asp-Asp-Ala-Gly-Leu-Val (GEPPPGKPADDAGLV), described by its discoverers as a fragment of a protein from human gastric juice. This BPC-157 peptide comes as 10 mg and 20 mg lyophilised vials, each size with its own lot certificate.

What is BPC-157?
BPC stands for “body protection compound”. In the early 1990s Predrag Sikirić’s group at the University of Zagreb described BPC as a larger peptide isolated from human gastric juice and BPC-157 as a fully characterised 15-amino-acid fragment of it, which they proposed carries its activity. The peptide is linear with free ends and four prolines; the group’s papers call it the “stable gastric pentadecapeptide BPC 157”.
Almost all published BPC-157 research is animal work, most of it rat studies from that same group, across tendon, ligament, gut, wound and vascular models. In rats and dogs the intact peptide is short-lived, with an elimination half-life under 30 minutes, and is broken down quickly into small fragments. It is often discussed next to TB-500, an unrelated peptide; see TB-500 vs BPC-157.

Each size is filled from its own lot and tested separately: the 10 mg lot by ILS Laboratories in San Diego with its full QC panel (which also reports endotoxin, sterility, heavy metals and a fentanyl screen), and the 20 mg lot by Accurate Test Labs. Both report HPLC purity, measured content and identity:

Tendon fibroblasts (2011). In rat tendon explants and fibroblasts, BPC-157 increased outgrowth, survival under oxidative stress and migration, and raised FAK and paxillin phosphorylation, without changing proliferation. Chang CH, et al. Journal of Applied Physiology, 2011.
Pharmacokinetics in rats and dogs (2022). The intact peptide had an elimination half-life under 30 minutes, and radiolabelled BPC-157 was rapidly broken into small peptide fragments and amino acids. He L, et al. Frontiers in Pharmacology, 2022.
Published human data are small and uncontrolled: a retrospective knee-pain series of 16 patients, a 12-patient pilot in interstitial cystitis and a two-person intravenous safety pilot, all from one US clinic group, with no placebo arm. Lee E, et al., 2021; Lee E, et al., 2024; Lee E, et al., 2025. A randomised phase 2 trial in hamstring strain was recruiting in October 2026 (NCT07437547).
Regulatory status
BPC-157 is not a component of any approved drug. FDA placed it in its 503A compounding category 2 (substances that may present significant safety risks) on 29 September 2023; the page now lists it among substances nominated and then withdrawn. At its July 2026 Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee meeting FDA proposed that BPC-157 not be added to the compounding bulks list. WADA’s Prohibited List names it under non-approved substances. FDA compounding safety-risk list. Clean Peptide’s BPC-157 is a laboratory reference material only, not for human or veterinary use.
BPC-157 is a synthetic 15-residue peptide, GEPPPGKPADDAGLV, described by its Zagreb discoverers as a fragment of a protein (BPC, body protection compound) isolated from human gastric juice.
What is the BPC-157 molecular weight?+
1419.5 g/mol for C62H98N16O22 (PubChem CID 9941957). The free base is CAS 137525-51-0; the acetate salt is CAS 216441-37-1.
Has BPC-157 been studied in humans?+
Only in small uncontrolled reports from one US clinic group (16, 12 and 2 people) with no placebo arm. A 2025 systematic review found 35 preclinical studies and one clinical one. A randomised phase 2 trial was recruiting in October 2026.
Is BPC-157 FDA-approved?+
No. It is not part of any approved drug. FDA placed it in its 503A category 2 in September 2023 and in July 2026 proposed not adding it to the compounding bulks list. WADA prohibits it in sport.
What is the difference between BPC-157 and TB-500?+
They are unrelated. BPC-157 is a 15-residue gastric-protein fragment; TB-500 is a 7-residue acetylated fragment of thymosin beta-4. They are often studied and sold together, as in the BPC-157 / TB-500 blend.
What do the BPC-157 certificates show?+
Each size has its own certificate, listed on this page with lot number, laboratory, test date, HPLC purity, measured content and identity: ILS Laboratories for the 10 mg lot and Accurate Test Labs for the 20 mg lot.
